The inspired poetry of the 16th-century Spanish mystic St John of the Cross carried by music composed by Tomasz Łuc.
It is not the first time when Mikroklimat publishing company presents an album where past and present times meet.
This time the artist who builds bridges between the 16th and 21st centuries is a composer, guitarist and producer Tomasz Łuc. He specializes in film and theatre music. In 2017 he was awarded first prize for the best debut in film music at the Polish Film Festival in Los Angeles and for his music to two theatrical plays at the first edition of the Teatroteka Fest. in Warsaw.
The LOVE album is very special at the Polish music market.
The deep and moving texts of St John of the Cross inspired the composer to reach for the classical, refined sound of acoustic instruments. String quartet, double bass, piano, classical guitar, vibraphone and flute side by side with exotic, creating mysterious atmosphere instruments such as duduk, ney flute, oud, bandoneon. The range of sounds is completed with percussion instruments from all parts of the world that add colour and energy to the recordings.
The sounds of instruments are topped with unusual solo voices. The texts of St John of the Cross are performed in the original language by native Spaniards. Most of the songs are sung by Curro Piñana – a charismatic flamenco singer whose voice timbre is both typical flamenco and lyrical. Lorea Aranzasti Pardo with her velvety alto takes a change from regular performances with her jazz group. The last song on the album is performed by Lidia – an opera singer with her elaborate mezzosoprano singing.
The original Spanish one can hear in the vocal parts was chosen to show its beauty and the power of expression but first of all to preserve the accuracy of the poet’s words untouched by translation. Spanish has a touch of mystery so the expression embodied in the songs should stimulate listeners to read translations of the poetry by St John of the Cross.
What makes this album so exceptional is also a DVD accompanying the CD, with video recordings from the musical sessions. The last song is presented in a kind of fictionalized form. The films from the studio sessions reflect the atmosphere of the recordings. They show how emotionally involved both the singers and the musicians were.
Tomasz Łuc built a lot of bridges with his album LOVE. He made possible the meeting of tradition and modernity, western and eastern music, outstanding Spanish singers and leading Polish and foreign musicians, classical and popular music, listeners from all over the world and the poetry of St John of the Cross.
Due to its form, melodiousness and energy the music does not dominate the words but helps to carry their important message. It can be a soothing companion of our everyday activities, directing our thoughts to the most significant matters.
